What Is a TV Box Set?

A TV Box Set is a purchasable bundle that includes all completed seasons in a series. Your customers can buy the entire series at a discounted price. Customers who already own some seasons will see a “Complete your series” option to purchase remaining seasons at a discount.

Each season is delivered at the highest available resolution. For example, Season 1 is available in SD and HD, and Season 2 is available in SD, HD, and UHD. The customer receives Season 1 in HD and Season 2 in UHD. Customers see the exact resolution on the confirmation page.

TV Box Sets can only be published using the MovieLabs method at this time. Please check the relevant EMA sample files in the Sample Files Repository.

Delivery Requirements

Each TV Box Set delivery requires:

  • A unique identifier or Content ID (SKU). Use the existing identifier if the series is already delivered to Prime Video.
  • Avails (EMA).

Quick Tip

Dedicated metadata (MEC), manifest (MMC), and artwork are not required for TV Box Sets.

Content Rights (EMA Avails)

Avail delivery is required to publish TV Box Sets.

FormatProfile

For WorkType = series, Prime Video does not offer quality-specific TV Box Sets. Use Max as the recommended FormatProfile value. Prime Video still accepts SD, HD, or UHD, and converts these to Max. You can confirm this in Slate.

Submit a single avail with one FormatProfile value (HD, SD, UHD, or Max). Avails submitted across different FormatProfile values will be rejected.

TVOD Policy Types

TV Box Set policies for TVOD content use two policy types:

  • Downloads: Controls whether downloading is enabled (On) or disabled (Off).
  • AssetRestriction: Controls language availability using LanguageHoldbacks or IncludedLanguages.

Quick Tip

All TV Box Set policies are inherited from episode-level policies. You cannot configure policies directly at the box set level. If you submit policy values at the TV Box Set level via EMA, they are recorded. However, they do not affect content behavior.

Excluding Seasons from the “Complete your series” Discount

Customers who own some seasons see a “Complete your series” Buy Box for the rest. The discount percentage is the numeric value in RetailerSpare1 on the series-level avail (for example, 30 = 30% discount).

You have two options to exclude a season from the discount using season-level avails.

Note: You may have Temporary Price Reductions (TPRs) or Prime Member Deals (PMDs) running on titles in a TV Box Set. Prime Video does not apply a double discount in this case. Those seasons are automatically excluded from “Complete your series” discounts.

Option 1: New Release

Use this option when your season just completed and you want to exclude it from the discount. Set the LicenseRightsDescription field in the season-level EMA avail to “New Release”.
This value does not turn off automatically. When the season is no longer a new release, deliver an updated avail removing the “New Release” value.

Validation Rules

Your TV Box Set must satisfy all of these rules before it publishes:

Season avail start dates must be on or before the series avail start date.

Season avail end dates must be on or after the series avail end date.

Series avail SeasonCount must equal the number of completely aired seasons in the series.

All seasons must meet publishing requirements.

The series offer price must be less than the sum of all season prices.

Season avails must include the right SeriesAltID (EMA 1.6) or SeriesContentID (EMA 1.7).

Episode avails must include the right SeasonAltID (EMA 1.6) or SeasonContentID (EMA 1.7).

Quick Tip

TV Box Sets use avails only. You do not need to create or deliver separate metadata, manifest, or artwork files. The box set inherits all episode-level metadata and content already in the catalog. This means less work for you to publish.
